About Your IP Address

What is an IP Address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves two main functions: identifying the host or network interface and providing the location of the host in the network.

What is IPv4 vs. IPv6?

IPv4 (e.g., `172.217.14.228`) is the fourth version and the most commonly used, but it only supports about 4.3 billion unique addresses, which are running out.

IPv6 (e.g., `2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334`) is the newer version, offering a vastly larger address space (trillions of trillions) to accommodate the growing number of devices connecting to the internet.

Why does my IP address change?

Most residential Internet Service Providers (ISPs) assign dynamic IP addresses. This means your IP address can change periodically. Your ISP does this to manage their pool of available IP addresses efficiently. Businesses or users who need a consistent address can often pay for a static IP address.
